Activity: Specific Themes

The activity of the group tends to emphasize specific themes. In the most recent past, two research grants oriented this thematic approach. In the end of the 2000s, we focused on the social changes in European societies as a whole, with a particular attention paid to Romania. International migration came out as an important determinant of current values' reconfigurations.

CHANGES IN CONTEMPORARY EUROPEAN SOCIETIES

Main Objective:

- Investigating the cultural changes in contemporary Europe, using both longitudinal (in dynamics) and transversal (comparison across European societies) perspectives, with a focus on Romania.

Methodological options:

- Secondary data analysis, using large scale data sets, particularly the values surveys (EVS/WVS), which has the advantage to include Romania starting with the 1990-1993 wave (EVS/WVS is the only large scale data set source which includes data for Romania starting with the beginning of the 1990s).
- Data analysis of a survey of the Romanian irregular (circulatory) migrants. The survey was carried out in 2008, using a convenience sample, and a very short version of the EVS 2008 questionnaire.

MigVaSo:

SOCIAL CHANGE UNDER THE IMPACT OF INTERNATIONAL MIGRATION

Main Objective:

- Investigating whether international migration determines the increase of similarities between European countries, having social values, participation and life satisfaction as main dimensions, ultimately leading to better institutional integration.
